Volunteer: A.W. Perry Homestead Museum Docent

Museum Tours  

Overview of Role:   Docents guide regular, rotating tours of the A.W. Perry Homestead Museum for visitors of all ages.   Responsibilities include leading tours, sharing accurate history, answering questions, and ensuring visitor safety and engagement.  

Time Commitment & Scheduling:   2 hour block one day per week, with a rotating weekend option.   Availability: Tuesday-Thursday and Saturday 11am-1pm and special hours tours. Sign up for which hours work best for your schedule. Group tours available outside of normal public hours available and will be shared when booked.  

Responsibilities & Activities:   Lead curated or themed tours (e.g., general, family-friendly, school groups).   Provide museum information, safety briefing, and accessibility accommodations as needed.   Manage group sizes, start/end times, and visitor flow. Record attendance and report any maintenance or safety concerns.  

Requirements & Training:   Interest in local history and storytelling; no prior docent experience required.   Completion of museum orientation and tour-training session.  Commitment to inclusive, respectful engagement with all visitors.  

Orientation & Training Schedule:   1–2 sessions covering tour scripts, safety protocols, and visitor engagement tips.   Practice tours with feedback; shadowing opportunities with museum staff.   Access to tour materials, scripts, and reference guides.
